When I was fifteen my parents decided to leave me at home and fly off to Hawaii. I don’t remember much, but I do remember throwing a really huge – really “mature” fit. I was a good kid at heart though, and pretty soon after they flew away I was struck by the big, hairy, guilt monster, and since it WAS their wedding anniversary I decided I would forgive them… and I decided I would make it up to them, by throwing them a party. Without my Aunt Deb I never would have pulled it off, but I did, and the rest is history. After that one party, I started planning everything that I could get my hands on. I planned birthday parties, baby showers, proms, even a wedding or two. I became the social chair for my sorority in college (Phi Mu), and planned everything from Great Gatsby themed balls to morning brunches with the frat boys, which we girls lovingly named, “Muffins with the Mus.” I have always been passionate about all things design and passionate about parties, and that’s why I was so quick to accept my Mom’s invitation to plan my sister’s second baby shower with her. What I didn’t expect was to get absolutely no time this summer to plan it. When I tell you I have been busy… I HAVE BEEN BUSY. This summer has been the sister to insanity herself, and because of an unfortunate number of travel delays I found myself rolling/flying into the bluegrass at 12 o clock’ midnight on the eve before my sister’s baby shower – not a thing planned – not a cake baked. That’s right I was supposed to bake the cake too. So the morning of the shower, my Mom and I woke up at 8:00 am and spent the next eight hours scrambling to make a mountain out of a mole hill, and somehow – I think we did it.

*One of my best-kept secrets for getting a cake ready fast: Betty Crocker that cake!! Then… make homemade icing. This cake is Double Fudge (Betty Crocker) with Strawberry Swiss Meringue Buttercream. Click the photo below for the link to my favorite tutorial for Swiss Meringue Buttercream from Sweetapolita.

This was hands-down-to-the-ground the fastest shower I have ever had to plan, yet my Mom and I both agreed it was one of our favorites. I think sometimes some of the best and sweetest things result from a wish and a prayer, and this was definitely one of them. Enjoy the photos – This girl is headed to bed. It’s back to the summer cray-cray tomorrow!!
